“Tch.”

Madam Mami seemed displeased. I had no way of knowing it. I sat on the floor, rocking back and forth, humming happily. Mami muttered to herself in the background.

“You shall have to dream for a while, child. Stasis would block me out, no? The deterioration shall have to move at a slower pace than Mami anticipated. For now, let them believe in recovery.”

Mami came to me. I felt nothing but a sense of peace as she placed a hand upon the back of my head. A warmth and soft vibration lulled me into a state of drifting. The world became a cloudy sea through which I could not move, and could only observe. Mami grew distant, and I felt myself pulled in two directions. At one end, the love of Mami held me in peace. At the other end, the gentle tugs of my physical self sent tickling sparks through my mind.

I watched the first few days with interest. Hours passed like minutes in this heightened state of relaxation. My other self rested, regained some strength, and made it out of bed with a little help. She spoke like her old self again. The frustration came again and again as she asked for help with simple things.

“Calm yourself, Country. I'll help you with those sleeves.”

“I...I can't live like this, Milk. My hands keep shaking. I'm uncoordinated. My head won't clear at all. I don't even know what happened! I want to...I want to do my job again.”

A lot of conversations went that way. The change in Milk's personality was clear. Country, my other me, wouldn't notice, but I could see the sad look from the corner of Milk's vision, and the way she hurried me along to something else when I grew frustrated. I could hear the conversations with Colace that weren't meant for my other self's ears.

“She's healthy. She's not getting better, though. Dr. Hammer couldn't come up with an explanation.”

Colace sighed. “You know what that means, right?”

Milk sagged. “I hate what it means. It happened when I was responsible for her. I have a feeling it happened because she chose bad company. My company. And whatever dark things have it out for me.”

“You can't think like that.”

“And why not!?” Milk shouted at him. “We can send a broken girl back to her father and I can fool myself into believing she'll live a comfortable life, happy and with the best help money can buy, or I can keep her on the ship, where she clearly wants to be. Either way, she can't do what she loves anymore.”

“Milk...”

“I'm going to retire.”

“Milk!”

She stormed off to her room. And then the days blurred by again. I watched as Colace struggled to take on the extra responsibilities of the ship. He did so with sombre grace and acceptance. Soon he was performing
